The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that occurred in the United States exposed in many US Federal Government agencies the need for larger and more sophisticated communications systems. One of which was in operation at the Federal Aviation Administration’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center (ATCSCC). The ATCSCC regulates air traffic when weather, equipment, runway closures or other impacting conditions place stress on the National Air Traffic Management System. In such instances, specialists at the ATCSCC take action to modify traffic demands in order to maintain safety and throughput standards.
It was from the ATCSCC that all US Air Traffic was ordered grounded during the 9/11 terrorists attacks.
